GLP-1 Customized Dosing vs. Micro-dosing: Clearing Up Misconceptions
There is a lot of buzz around the idea of micro-dosing GLP-1 medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide for weight loss right now, leading many patients to ask the question, “Is micro-dosing right for me?”
To answer this important question, first we must clarify what micro-dosing is, versus what it is so often confused with…“customized dosing.”
Customized Dosing
When we hear the term “micro-dosing” in reference to GLP-1 medications, be it through online platforms, podcasts or social media, usually what is actually being discussed is “customized dosing.”
Customized dosing is a holistic approach to using GLP-1 medications specifically for weight loss. Because there is no one size fits all when it comes to weight loss, customized dosing allows us to work closely with a patient to determine the exact dose of GLP-1 medication that is right for them. This dose may be lower than the doses standardly recommended.
For instance, the maximum dose of Semaglutide is 2.4mg but a patient might only require 1.0mg dosing to achieve excellent results. The upside here is potentially they may experience less side effects, less risk of muscle loss, and a better chance of maintaining results long term.
However, this is not a true “micro-dose” as it still falls under the category of therapeutic dosing.
At Be Well all of our GLP-1 medications are customized. It is our opinion that customized dosing is the best approach for every patient. In our experience, whether someone wants to lose 20 pounds or 100 pounds will not determine the dose of medication. For instance, a person who wants to lose 100 pounds may only require a low or a mid-range dose. Whereas a woman in peri-menopause with severe insulin resistance, may require higher dosing. Dosing should be individualized.
Who is a good candidate for Customized Dosing?
Anyone who is a good candidate for the use of GLP-1 medications for weight loss.
Micro-Dosing
Micro-dosing GLP-1 medications is different from customized dosing, in that you are prescribed a standardized, very low dose of the medication that is below the level of therapeutic dosing. This dose will likely be much lower than what most people will need to achieve weight loss.
Micro-dosing is not recommended to achieve weight loss goals in most cases.
While we do not have studies showing the safety and efficacy of micro-dosing GLP-1 therapy over time, it appears that it may be a safe long-term approach with potential benefits.
Who is a good candidate for micro dosing?
Anyone who wants to:
· Maintain their current weight after completing a GLP-1 or other weight loss program.
· Prevent weight gain or rebound weight gain.
· Optimize their fitness levels.
· Reduce inflammation.
· Enhance mitochondrial function and cell health.
· Potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, neurological disease, fatty liver disease and diabetes.
